Bathroom Maintenance
Bathrooms are constantly in need of maintenance.
Bathtubs,
sinks, and toilets
collect dirt and layers of film very easily and for this reason they need
regular cleaning to keep them looking their best. Toilets and wash basins should
be cleaned at least once every two weeks, depending on how frequently they are
used. However, there is more to bathroom maintenance than just scrubbing the
tub, washing out the sink, scrubbing the toilet and washing the bathmats. Below
you will find some maintenance tips that will help your bathroom perform and
look its best.
Caulking: For those of you that have
tile in your bathroom, always check that
the grout is solid and not full of holes or missing in some spots. You want to
make sure to secure the whole area and prevent water from seeping into the
cracks between tiles. It’s a good idea to caulk at least once year, or whenever
you notice an area where the caulk's integrity has been compromised.
Furthermore, check to see that you have a good seal around the fixtures.
Bathroom Showers: Showers are constantly being used by a household. Typically
there will be at least one shower taken a day, depending on how many people
share the bathroom. For this reason you will notice the shower becoming filthy
quite fast. Whenever you notice white film or black mold be sure to scrub it
down with an abrasive cleaner. You will typically find this on shower curtains
or on shower doors.
If you have a shower door, it is a good practice to take the door out regularly
and check the tracks for mold or standing water. If water is standing in the
tracks, try drilling small holes at an angle in discrete areas so that this
water can drain back into the tub basin. Also, be sure to check the caulking in
these areas because it receives heavy wear and tear.
Toilets: Toilets should be cleaned at least once a week. If you let the toilet
collect filth for a long period of time, the task of cleaning it will not be
very easy. However, if you stay up with the maintenance, the task will not take
very long or be much work. Not only should you scrub out the inside, but you
should also take a rag around the base of the toilet to test for water.
Sometimes you will find a small amount of water seeping out from the base. If
you do notice water, fix this small leak immediately because it could lead to a
much bigger problem. Call a plumber at your earliest convenience because it is
their job to fix such leaks, and they can fix most problems quickly.
Bathroom Sink: Bathroom sinks often get dirtier than kitchen sinks due to the
fact that they do not have a garbage disposal breaking debris down. Everything
from toothpaste, spit, blood, makeup, hair, and shaving cream to the occasional
cotton swab, Q-Tip, toothbrush and jewelry all go down the bathroom sink at
sometime or another. For this reason it is a very good practice to pull the
drain stopper and clean it thoroughly. Furthermore, clean around the sink and
check around the fixtures for leaks.
Bathroom Floors: Bathroom floor mats collect a great deal of dirt. Dusty feet,
muddy feet, wet feet, you name it. They are typically designed to hide much of
the dirt that they collect, but this doesn’t mean that they aren’t in fact very
dirty. Also, because of the amount of water that they absorb, these mats should
be washed at least once a month. The regular floor will need to be cleaned just
as often as your kitchen floors.
Bathroom Exhaust Fan: Exhaust fans are a very important element to a bathroom.
Without proper ventilation, the bathroom will become susceptible to mold and
mildew growth. Dust will collect in the bathroom fan quite easily with the moist
environment and the nature of this fan so it is best to clean out the filter in
the bathroom fan and vacuum out the intake panel at least once a month. This
will ensure that the fan functions better as well.
